BACK TO SCHOOL CHECK-UP~ ROCK N' LEARN PHONICS 1 & 2 DVD'S

I am so happy I was lucky enough to get the Phonics 1 & 2 DVD's from Rock N' Learn! In the beginning I thought "Oh, yeah. It will be cute- the girls will love it." Well, it might have started that way but it ended as so much more!

Rock N' Learn was started by a school psychologist and his brother- Richard and Brad. Richard, the psychologist, felt a need to teach kids in a multi-sensory way to help them learn! In 1986 they were way ahead of the curve; It was an instant success and now, almost 30 years later, they are still receiving awards and accolades for their work.


As you know, Knuckles is in the middle of testing for developmental and educational delays. One of her biggest issues is memorizing. She seems unable to recall information on a day to day basis. So, I was VERY surprised to hear her repeat what she learned from Phonics 1 several days after watching it! She now knows how to spell "pop" and understands WHY it is spelled that way! She gets so excited- SEVERAL times a day, I hear "MOM! I know how to spell 'pop' want to hear it?!" Of course I want to hear it!

She also benefits from the 'talking mouth' that shows how to form the sounds with tongue and lips. Knuckles is in Speech Therapy and one of the issues being worked on is incorrect mouth and tongue movement- ie: tongue to teeth for 'th'. This is covered in this program! She can 'see' the sound! The Phonics 1 info page specifically states that this program is "perfect" for special education and I think I believe them!

The girls are really into the characters. It is their own little 'Soap Opera' of who is the 'dreamy'-est and who sings the best. They also spend time arguing over which one of them gets to 'be' which girl from the videos- whomever they think sings better is the 'one to be' I guess. It sounds silly but it really attests to the videos ability to captivate and pull kids into it. If they are this involved with the cast, they are going to want to watch it!

Rock N' Learn also offers free worksheets to supplement the Phonics 1 & 2 videos. I think this is GREAT! It's not just "I got your money, here are my videos." The worksheets reinforce all the letters, blends, digraphs and all other combinations taught in these videos. They are really a great tool!

So much stuff! But, it is definitely delivered in a way that kids can understand!

The Phonics 2 DVD builds on what is taught in Phonics 1. It covers long and short vowels (which, admittedly, I have a rough time with!) silent consonants, 'phonemic segmentation', rule breakers, sentence practice and it even has 2 read-alongs! The twins watched this video once but it was WAY over their heads! They are sticking with what they can handle for now but we will be using this in the future- for sure.


I just can not say enough about Rock N' Learn! I am so impressed! I was SUPER excited to find that they offer so many more subjects! Math, Science and Social Studies, Foreign Languages and even Pre-School and Kindergarten. I am REALLY SUPER excited about the Telling Time DVD and the Money & Making Change DVD. I am really thinking about ordering the Spanish 1 & 2 DVD or CD's since we don't have a Language curriculum yet.
