Yes, reading can be hard, but you can make it Super Duper fun, too!

Learning how to read is hard work!  I don't remember my instruction but I caught on fairly quickly and have never had a problem reading.  In fact, one of my dad's favorite memories of me was reading the receipts from the grocery store to match it up with what he brought into the house.  If there was an unaccounted for bag of chips or candy bar, I would send my little brother out to the car to find it.  We aren't 100% sure how old I was at the time but we think it was around 4 or 5.

As I got older, reading became more and more a part of my life.  I won the summer reading contests at the library just about every year.  I would win prizes all summer long like t-shirts, theme park tickets, book bags, etc.  Reading transported me to places I can never hope to go in real life.  I fell in love, traveled to places that only exist in other worlds, cried over heartbreak...  It's just endless.

A love of reading is as essential as breathing.

Fast forward 20 years and now I have my own kids.  I just assumed they would be like me~ laying in bed, losing whole weekends to Mary Shelley and John Steinbeck.  It never, in a million years, occurred to me that my kids would have problems learning how to read.

But they do, dyslexia, dyspraxia, phonological disorder and other big words are all a part of our current vocabularyUnfortunately, reading is not as easy for my kids as it was for me.

One of the main things my oldest has issues with is anything related to phonemesRhyming was so hard for her!  It seriously took until late in 2nd grade until she caught on, and even now as we're finishing up 3rd grade she still struggles a little.  I grab anything that says "phonics" on the front so we can practice together and try to get her skills up to grade level.  That's why I was so excited to get the opportunity to review from Super Duper Publications!

Super Duper Publications was started almost 30 years ago by Sharon {a Speech-Language Therapist} and Thomas {a lawyer} for Sharon's SLT public school kids.  Now, it's a full time passion disguised as a job.

Because of the phonological issues my girls have, I chose to review the Webber Phonological Awareness Bingo

The first thing I noticed was the quality of the materials.  The Bingo boards and cards are laminated so they can easily be wiped off and won't bend too easily.  They are also large and fully colored so kids don't get bored looking at them.  Even the Bingo cards are laminated so they'll last long after your kids have mastered the skills.  The Bingo chips are large so children with fine motor skills won't have too hard a time picking them up.

I also LOVE when games are boxed with a place for everything.  I hate opening up a box and finding everything a mess that has to be straightened out while the kids are dancing around you asking "Can we play, yet?"

The Bingo cards are double sided {4 people can play at a time} and each side is a different game.

You pick the cards with the corresponding number, and read the "clues" for your kids to decipher.  One thing I discovered was that some of the clues are tough.  I wasn't sure at first, but as I thought about it, I decided that it was a good thing.  While your kids need more help, you can assist them during the game.  As they start to master the skills, the harder clues will show you that they've really mastered it and it's not just an easy guess.

I also love that you can incorporate the littles into the game, too.  When the baby saw that we were playing a game, she just had to be involved, of course!
We were playing card #2~ Letter Sound Identification but with her, I used it as Letter Identification.  I had her tell me the sound it made, I told her which letter it was and we helped her find it on her board.

The cards have a full color picture answer so I could show her what she was looking for.  This helps her because she is looking for the match instead of just pointing it out/telling her where it is.

Guess who won that game...

Super Duper has so many other products that I can't even begin to list them.  They're great for Autism, Speech, Visual...  It's endless.  Check out Super Duper's eCatalog for a complete list of all they offer!
