Besides those great things, and of course the besides the greatness of Inside Out alone….there is one other HUGE reason to buy Inside Out on DVD/BLURAY. Your copy of Inside out will include Riley’s First Date; an all new Pixar animated short that is super awesome! Check out this feature below!
Inside Out’s short Riley’s First Date, puts us in the home with Riley as a 12 yr old. There she is hanging out with her parents when they hear a knock at the door…….it’s a boy. Potential trouble for sure! Coming from a place where all parents to tweens and teens can relate, this adorable short gives us the inside look into what Mom and Dad (and the dreaded boy) are thinking in this awkward and scary moment! Will they be able to handle “Riley’s First date?“.
I can’t wait to share more with you on Riley’s First Date? with our interview later this week with the director!
Well on my recent trip to San Francisco, we had the opportunity to sit down with Kyle MacLachlan who plays Dad, and the adorable Kaitlyn Dias voice of none other than Riley! Kyle MacLachlan is quite the quirky yet sophisticated handsome man (Voted #1 hottest Disney Dad), best known for his roles in The S.H.I.E.L.D, The Good Wife, Believe, Desperate Housewives, Sex in the City, and Twin Peaks along with many guest appearances on shows. He is a perfect fit for the movie and was eager to play the role….. I laughed when he stated the obvious” When Pixar calls, you know, — it’s hard to say no. “. OBVIOUSLY!!
Kaitlyn Dias……blew me away! Inside Out was her very first voice acting job. She actually was only hired as a scratch voice, but she did such a fantastic job that they offered her the main voice for Riley! Since Inside Out took 4 years to film, Kaitlyn was just 11 yrs old when filming started…..much can change in 4 years! This is what she had to say about the voice change:
“Well, for me since it was over a long period of time for me, I was working on it for four years. So, of course, my voice changed a little bit. So, over time I had to actually make my voice a little bit higher to make it sound younger, because I’m 16 now and Riley’s 11. So, it’s a bit of a time difference. “
For a first timer- she killed it! It was great to hear about how she grew with Riley, and actually learned from Riley. What exactly did she learn? ……..” That it’s definitely best to listen to your parents. “. (I hope my oldest son is reading this.)
Question: Did you work on Inside Out change your perspective on emotions and how you view them?
From Kaitlyn: ” The concept of it definitely gets inside your head, especially after watching it. It was just like, oh, Joy must be at the controls now or Anger must be at the controls now. And it sort of gets into the way you think about your own thoughts. “
From Kyle: “That was true also in speaking with Kalum, my son, about it. He would begin to refer to my anger side, or so, he would recognize the emotion obviously and identify with it and be able to discern who was sort of guiding his attitude at the time. So. That’s good thought.”
Speaking of Kalum, Kyle talked about how little Kalum was quite confused by the new found moustache Dad had acquired.
Question: Who’s your favorite emotion, and why?
From Kyle: “I like Joy. I tend to be in joy mode most of the time.”.
From Kaitlyn: : ” I’m gonna have to go with Anger, because he has hilarious facial expressions. Plus the fact that he explodes and you make s’mores off of him. “
Question: Which part of your personality went into character? How much of your personality is in your character?
From Kyle: “Actually a lot of really for me. I just brought in kind of how I relate to my son. I like to think of myself as pretty patient, calm and relaxed. There are moments when, you know, anger takes over, but, I try not to have any of that in front of my son at all. So, calm, cool, and collected is what I like to be. “
I thought it was adorable when Kaitlyn said she could relate to Goofball Island! She said “My mom will attest, too.”! I love Goofball Island!
What do you think is the most important message for parents to take away from the film?
From Kaitlyn: ” I think I’d just say to the parents watching this, try and make sure that you can recognize when your own child’s going through this so that you can make sure that you’re there for them and make sure that they know that you are supporting them.”
From Kyle: “……..You recognize that in order for, your child or whoever to grow, there are painful things they’re gonna have to go through. And I think the acceptance of that and realizing that ultimately the thing that’s gonna make it easier is just to be present as a family. Sometimes you don’t have any answers. You know, it’s just you just have to go through and you just have to experience, you know. And then the resiliency of the human spirit will carry you. “
It was soooo much fun to talk to both of these talented actors, and to share a little bit about Riley’s First Date with you! Stay tuned on Thursday as we will have even more about the short and the intimate details!
Class is dismissed now…….you have full permission to head to the store now to buy Inside Out!
