Did you know that Home Grown Families is made up of 2 halves?? Well, I am Melissa ~ and I like to think I’m the original first half. I am a 20 something year old mom to 4 children, and currently traveling the country as nomads (well, as a travel nurse). I like to think of ourselves as people who enjoy the off beaten path~ the road less traveled, per say.
“Of all the rights of a woman, the greatest is to be a mother”…..Lyn Yutang
It seems there is only one thing I ever truly wanted to be….a mother. And not just any mother….I wanted to be the all American SUPER mom~ but it turns out that being a SUPER mom isn’t all that I thought it would be. I have changed from then and now, and continue to change every day as I embark on the motherhood journey. Being a SUPER mom is sooooo last century (Perhaps being a crappy mom is better). Now, I am learning to embrace my flaws & my strengths and allowing myself to be refined~ no matter how difficult that may be. I have learned that parenting is done instinctively, and in order to be the parent I desired to be I needed to throw out any preconceived notion of what it should be like.
Surely it would not be peaches and cream. My journey to becoming a mother was not easy- full of many uncertainties as I dealt with prematurity, ADHD, and the loss of my womanhood (so I thought at the time). Although this uterus is closed permanently, we are in daily pray for a blessing through adoption. Being a mom is while very rewarding…………EXTREMELY hard. It is in that point where Home Grown Families was born.
Desiring a place to share my every thought on motherhood, I founded Home Grown Families. I have always been considered a social butterfly, so this makes sense for me. I have LOVED sharing our life experiences with my readers- and of course sharing great products to have and AMAZING places to travel & see! Home Grown Families has allowed me to connect with other mom bloggers and amazing companies along with the chance to see brand new things I would not have been able to see otherwise. I even walked the GREEN carpet!
What exactly is a “large” family??? I have always wanted a larger than norm family, but now that according to society we have a large family…..well it just doesn’t seem large enough. If you know me at all, you know I am a dreamer per say~ wild ideas on the places I will go and the things I will do. Our plans include growing our family through special needs foster care and international adoption, joining the peace corps when the kids go off to college, perhaps even living in Africa for a while. I may not know the plans God has for me, but I surely intend on trusting that HIS plan is the best for me. I can not wait to see what life brings! For now, I am enjoying life with 4 VERY busy little ones.
My Dear Husband~ Edward
family my life began when I met my amazing husband, Edward. I ~like all girls wanted the fairy tale love story…….while it may not have played out like a story book he sure was my knight in shining armor. He was exactly what I needed in that time of my life. I am soooo forever grateful that we crossed paths. 10 years strong…..and looking forward to many more!
He is an amazing father, and has qualities I pray every night that I had. He is patient, quiet, and not easily angered. He is also reserved, hates small talk, hates change, hates crowds, and loves the color black. I am everything opposite of him. We balance each other out, and without him I would just be a blabbering spaz. I thank God every day, that I found him.
The oldest of the pack- Fast Eddy
Fast Eddy is our oldest, and is in second grade this year. He has to be the coolest kid I know. He can be found break dancing anytime there is a beat, picking out “fresh” shoes, bouncing off the walls, cuddling with his mama, working with his Daddy, living by faith, begging for dreadlocks, and building lego masterpieces! He has made me into the woman I am today, and I am ever so grateful to have him in my life. Although he struggles with ADHD, his energy is what draw others near him.
The Cuddle one~Carrot Top
Carrot Top, is the middle (KIND OF) child. The sweet and quiet one. The one who loves to be cuddled, read books, listen to classical music, swim in the pool, sing in the shower, dance REALLY fast, stay up really late, and just hang out with his family. I love the way his hair curls under, the way his sings to the baby when she cries, and the way his arms swing when he runs. He makes sure to thank God everyday for his blessings and not a day goes by without him running up to say “I just love you Mama”. We prayed very hard for Carrot Top, as his pregnancy came after 2 miscarriages. The Lord gives and takes away, and I feel so blessed that I was given him. He was the perfect addition to our family!
The Miracle Baby- Lil
” For this child we prayed, and God granted our requests” 1 Samuel 1:27
Our third little blessing LIL, was born unexpectedly at just 26 weeks (her birth story here). Even when there were times we weren’t sure if she would make it, our little girl fought on. We prayed without ceasing for a full recovery and healing of her immature body. After a long journey in the NICU, we finally brought our little one home to be with her family. Despite having some medical problems associated with extreme prematurity, she is thriving and is such a beautiful and happy princess!
God knew it would take one strong little girl to keep up with these boys! She is 4 yrs old now, and although it was the most difficult thing we have ever gone through we would go through it all again in a heartbeat! She has mommy by the heart strings, and bad! She loves all things pink and girly- and can often be found looking in Mommy’s make up and hair bin. She is determined, strong minded, and I have no doubt in my mind that God has something big planned for her. I seriously ♥ this little girl 🙂
The Baby- forever and always~ RYE
Our newest and last beautiful child is Rye. Born November 17th, she is just perfect and truly a good baby. You can read our life changing birth story here. She is spunky and full of laughter! I love her natural go with the flow disposition and uncanny ability to make you smile no matter what is going on in the day. She is a born comedian~ making even the grumpiest giggle with her dance moves and fake laugh 🙂
Looking forward to adding to our family through adoption. The unknown is exciting isn’t it!
