Becoming a foster parent can be a lot like becoming a biological parent. There are tons of things that need to be done to prepare yourself for this new addition to your home. If you are already a parent you may already have many of these needs met. Although the list may be shorter, there is a list none the less. There are a few major differences you have to keep in mind if you plan to foster. The first thing to keep in mind is that you never know exactly what age child may be coming into your care. They could be a newborn, a 3 year old, or somewhere in between. You also need to plan for both boys and girls. So, you guessed it, variety is key! You will have MONTHS to get ready before your first placement but today I wanted to share with you “5 Must Haves for your first night with your Foster Baby”.
It is likely that your little one will appear in the later afternoon or evening and with little warning. It is SUPER important that you have many different sizes in diapers available! Most foster children come with very little possessions, and after a long disruptive day…..they could benefit from you staying close and not running to store to pick up diapers and other essentials.
Huggies Little Movers are my go to diapers for toddlers (We ♥ all Huggies!)! They have a great contour shape for little moving legs, and double grip tabs on a snug waistband to keep diapers on as babies runs crazy! They are the only diaper to last through the night without leaks~ 12 hour leak lock protection! A good’s night rest can do everyone good that first night! We try to keep diapers in every size, along with some pull ups.
The first few days with your little one are packed with appointments and parent visits………..you won’t have time to worry about going out to shop but luckily Sam’s Club has you covered! If you are blessed enough to have one near you, Sam’s Club has Mom’s in mind! Sam’s Club has FREE shipping on diapers and wipes- either right to your front door or shipped to your local store. Sam’s Club already saves me soooo much time on grocery shopping, and not having to run out to get diapers saves me even more!
You are going to need clothes 😉 Many of these children will be coming to you with only the shirts on their backs. Unlike a biological child, your friends and family will likely not be going out to buy your new addition cute clothes as gifts. If you have children you may have already started to save good pieces of clothes that your children have grown out of. If not, you do not have to spend a fortune. Thrift store like Goodwill are great places to find lightly used quality pieces of clothing. We have been collecting for… years. We have all of our clothes organized in bins, separated by size and gender so we can quickly grab that bin and get things out for our little one.
For your first night, the most important thing is to have a drawer with pajamas of all sizes- so you can bathe baby and jammy up!
3- Formula and Baby Food
Your first night may be a little rough when it comes to food……so have some of the MUCH LOVED baby food flavors, some puffs, Graduate meals, and cans of different brands of formula (find out what your local WIC office offers so you can have that brand on hand). Sam’s Club also offers FREE shipping on formula as well! * Along with formula, I have 3-4 different types of bottles as well so we won’t need any midnight runs to the store!
4- A bed
At this point, you have already gone through your home inspection and have a baby room all set up! First night…..have a playpen set up and make sure crib mattress is as low as it can go for safety concerns! While we don’t use playpens for everyday use, they are GREAT for baby’s first night~!
5- A Family waiting……
This is the most important. A waiting family is all they REALLY need. A family waiting to love them for the minute…a day….a week…..a year. A family waiting to show them love in the darkest hour. Start with that and you’ll do just fine.
Whether your a busy Mom to little ones or you are preparing to becoming a foster Mama….a Sam’s Club membership can make life much easier!!! From FREE shipping on baby necessities like formula, diapers, and wipes to bulk food buying soo you are shopping less! Be sure to look into a Sam’s Club near you!
